Gingival Recession

What is Gingival Recession?

Gingival recession is the situation where gingiva
border falls below tooth enamel whereas root
surfaces becomes apparent.

In What Age Group is Gingiva Recession Observed?

Gingiva recession can be seen in all individuals in
the community including youngsters and adults.

Brushing the teeth with wrong brushing
techniques, brushing the teeth for more than 3
times a day, brushing teeth harshly, demobilization
in teeth, high and abnormal frenulums, gingiva

Teeth should be brushed with medium hard
brushes in circular movements and movements
should never be too hard.

How Do Gingiva Diseases Cause Gingival Recession?

Gingiva diseases are inflammatory diseases that
occur inside gingiva. Melting occurs on the bone
tissue around the tooth due to the inflammation in
gingiva and recession occurs in bones
structure. Following the bone tissue, recession also
takes place in gingiva tissue .

What are the Treatment Ways In Gingival Recession?

If gingival recession occurs, 3 treatment methods
are applied as being treatment of damage incurred,
treatment of dental sensitivity, and replacement of
gingival tissue by surgical methods.

How Can the Damage That Occur on Tooth Tissue Be
Treated?

Damages occuring on gingiva can be treated by
applying filling on the damaged area or by applying
veneer to the whole tooth . In this way the
sensitivity problem is also eliminated.

In What Cases, Will Gingival Surgery Be Applied?

If occurrance takes place at the front areas creating
an aesthetical problem for the patients, in cases
where gingival disease has progressed, and in cases
where veneer on the back teeth is not sufficient,
gingival surgery is used.

How is Gingival Surgery Applied?

Gingival surgery is applied in two ways. In the
method named as grafting, the piece that is obtained
from the palate of patient and which is called graft
is applied to the area where there is gingival
recession. In the second method named as shifting,
if there is a healthy tissue next to the area of
recession, tissue is shifted towards the healthy
tissue and closed.

Will I Feel Pain?

Gingiva surgery is performed under local anesthesia. And it is not different from other prosthesis
operations and surgical operations. During the
operation no pain is felt and afterwards a painkiller
would be sufficient. In some patients, to whom
grafting method is applied, sometimes open
wounds remain inside palate. This situation can
cause discomfort during the next 3-4 days when
something touches that area. This feeling of
discomfort is lost in 1 week time and the wounded
area recovers without any traces.

What are the Things I Should Pay Attention to After
the Operation?

The most important point to pay attention to after
the operation is to keep the area protected from
mechanical trauma. You should pay attention to
what you eat and you should keep away from hard
food. Keeping the operation area clean is one of the
most important factors influencing the outcome of
treatment.

Can I Smoke During the Treatment Period?

Before the operation and during the recovery
period of 1 week after the operation, the patients have to avoid smoking. As a new
tissue forms in the region, providing nutrition for
that tissue is very important and smoking cigarettes
can have a negative impact on nutrition. It is not
suitable to apply gingiva treatment to patients who
smoke a lot of cigarettes.

Are Seams Applied After Gingival Operations? If They
are Applies, How Many Days Later are They Taken
out?

After gingival operations, suturing is usually
applied and the seams are taken one week after the
operation.

Are There Any Traces Left After Gingival Operations?

In grafting operations, between the region from
where graft is taken and the area where it is places,
there will be a slight difference of color. In cases
where artificial grafts are used and if shifting
operations are made, no traces will be left.

What are the Latest Developments In Gingiva Treatment?

In recent years many innovations took place in
gingiva treatment. In grafting operations, in many
cases instead of the grafts taken from patients,
artificial grafts are used and this avoids occurrence
of discomfort after the treatment. Gels with
enamel matrix protein basis enables the success
rate of treatments to be higher and they reduce the
discomforts occurring after the treatment.
